This lecture explores the question of women's religious authority in Judaism through biblical sources, rabbinic tradition, and the historical development of Jewish communities. Beginning with the biblical prophetesses and other remarkable women who shaped the spiritual, moral, legal, and political life of Israel, the lecture demonstrates that female religious leadership is not merely a modern phenomenon but has deep roots within Jewish tradition. It will also examine the lives of learned Jewish women who, despite social restrictions, studied and taught the Torah and the Talmud, as well as those who paved the way for women's ordination in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Particular attention will be given to Regina Jonas, the first woman to be ordained as a rabbi, and to the development of the female rabbinate in contemporary Judaism.
This event invites visitors of the Welcome to UP Festival to explore Jewish heritage through education, biography, and visual storytelling. It combines a guided tour of the Museum of Education of the University of Patras with the IMAGINE poster exhibition, which presents the life stories of seven Jewish women from the twentieth century. Developed by university students as part of an international educational project, the exhibition is based on archival material from the Centropa collection and highlights the diversity of Jewish experiences before, during, and after the Holocaust.
Students from the Department of Educational Sciences and Social Work who contributed to the exhibition will serve as guides, sharing not only the biographies they researched but also the process of transforming archival sources into educational narratives.
‚The unblemished joys of life are friendship, love, and a cheerful spirit‘ – so reads a poem by Christoph August Tiedge, whose lines Lina Mayer wrote in 1890 in the autograph book of 17-year-old Johanetta Mayer from Laufersweiler. At the time, the entry was a sign of deep affection – today, it is an occasion for remembrance.
The autograph book itself has an eventful history: Johanetta Mayer was born in Laufersweiler in 1873. She spent her life there and, together with her husband Isaak Frank, she started a family. Johanetta died young; Isaak was among the last Jewish residents of the village to be deported to Theresienstadt in July 1942. Their daughter Alma and her family had already left Laufersweiler in February 1939 to start a new life in Eretz Israel.
The Lisboa City Council intends to participate in the celebration for the European Days of Jewish Culture 2026, promoting three guided visits of Lisboa's Jewish historical heritage in the historic center. It will be an interesting opportunity to discover tangible and intangible evidence of a Jewish presence in the Tagus city related to the medieval period.
This municipal initiative invites people to discover places, stories and memories that highlight the contribution of the medieval Jewish community to the development of Lisboa's historical, cultural, and social identity, valuing a heritage that integrates its diversity.
The visits aim to contribute to the participants' knowledge and appreciation of Lisboa's Jewish historical and cultural heritage, promoting the dissemination and the disclosure of an old legacy that constitutes an essential part of the city's history.
The main event of the project is scheduled to take place on 30 September at 6:00 p.m. at the Jules Pascin Cultural Centre, bringing together the exhibition "Reinhardt – Vladigerov: Mutual Influences and Projections" and a live Klezmer concert performed by Alexander and Konstantin Vladigerov.
Project Concept
The project combines the realization of two interconnected cultural events:
– the presentation of the exhibition
"Reinhardt – Vladigerov: Mutual Influences and Projections", which explores a significant period in the life and creative development of the great Bulgarian composer Pancho Vladigerov (Pantcho Wladigeroff), focusing on his years of work in the theatres of Max Reinhardt in Berlin and Vienna;
– a romantic Klezmer concert performed by his descendants, the brothers Alexander and Konstantin Vladigerov, who continue the musical legacy of their grandfather through a contemporary artistic language.

The Song of Songs (Shir HaShirim) is one of the best-known books of the Tanakh. It is distinguished by its refined poetic language and its central theme—love. Drawing on this unique biblical text, the speaker will explore the understanding of love as presented in the rich tradition of Jewish sacred scripture. Through the dialogue between the bridegroom and the bride, participants will discover how poetic imagery and symbolism reveal a profound and timeless vision of love. The lecture will also invite reflection on whether such a language of love is still possible and meaningful in the context of contemporary culture.
