Panel discussion on Jewish people and arts in the stream of time which will take place in the oldest public library in Scandinavia, the Rikhardinkatu Library, Helsinki, Reading Room, 3rd floor.
Cultural researcher Irene Jelin, who will act as the moderator of the event, will first of all present the idea of EDJC and the theme of the year, Memory, and what memory is in Judaism.
Participants in the panel discussion include authors Samuel Davidkin who will tell us about the history of the Jews in Finland and Marja-Leena Mikkola, who will describe the career of the Russian Jewish novelist Isaac Babel both as an intellectual and an international writer. In the panel discussion will participate also the psychotherapist and scholar of religions Mervi Liljeberg who will present to us the evolution of psychotherapy as a one kind of a continuation of traditional Jewish values of human life. Master of Arts Outi Virmala , the fourth participant in the discussion, will share with us some basic ideas of the Jewish postholocaust philosophy which has been her field of academic studies.
The panelists will be willing to answer questions and participate in the general discussion about the Jewish Cultural History both in Finland and elsewhere. Jewish melodies will be presented by two professional musicians Gil Shaked-Agababa and Tal Gottdiner and hopefully there will also be a possibility for a short sing along- and Klezmer-dance session.
An exhibiton of books about Jewish history and arts will be open for public during the event.
After 16:00 o’clock, participants may opt in for a guided cultural walk around the historical Jewish sites of central Helsinki, weather permitting!

Lesung durch Peter Menasse
Der Autor schreibt im Buch „Ella Schapira (1897 bis 1990) – Lebensgeschichte einer jüdischen Kleidermacherin“, Böhlau-Verlag 2020 zusammen mit seiner Cousine Helen Liesl Krag über die gemeinsame Großmutter. Das Buch erzählt die Geschichte einer außergewöhnlichen, starken Frau, die trotz aller Widrigkeiten, Kriege und Verfolgung ein erfülltes und emanzipiertes Leben führte. Mehrmals musste sie flüchten: als Kind aus Russland ins österreichische Galizien, als junge Frau des Ersten Weltkriegs wegen nach Wien und später als Mutter dreier Kinder vor dem Nationalsozialismus nach England. Ihr Beruf, ihre Klugheit und ihre vorausschauende Intelligenz retteten ihr und ihrer Familie das Leben. Eine Geschichte, die ein Jahrhundert widerspiegelt und eine ganz besondere Frau, die für uns Nachgeborene ein Vorbild sein kann.
