EDJC 2023 > The Journey to Zion

The Journey to Zion

The intimate exhibition The Journey to Zion will present several artists and their artworks exhibited at the 5th and 12th Zionist Congresses in Basel (1901) and Karlovy Vary (1921). The exhibition will feature graphic works by E. M. Lilien, H. Struck, L. Urry, J. Steinhardt, and F. Feigl. It will be complemented by graphic works by I. B. Ryback, M. Chagall, H. Guth, and a photograph by L. Moholy-Nagy.
In 1906, the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design was founded in Jerusalem. Some of the artists featured in the exhibition taught at the academy or served as its directors. The artists' roots lie in Central Europe, particularly in the Czech lands.
As part of the exhibition, there will be a lecture on Rabbi Josef Levi Schreiber, who was the first rabbi in Brno (1782–1795) and subsequently served as rabbi in Lomnice for 30 years (1795–1825), as well as on his connection to the first Hebrew printing press in Brno.
The second part of the lecture will focus on illustrations for the Song of Songs, accompanied by examples of bibliophile editions.
The exhibition will be open at the Jewish School (Židovské nám. 212, Lomnice u Tišnova) on Saturday, September 19, 2025, from 12:00 noon to 5:30 p.m. The lecture will take place from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Places for the lecture are limited; reservations are requested by email at zidovska.skola.lomnice@gmail.com.
