On Sunday, 6 September 2026, Porto will join communities and cultural institutions across Europe in celebrating the European Days of Jewish Culture (EDJC) with a full day of activities organised by the Jewish Community of Porto.

From 10:00 to 17:00, visitors will be invited to discover three of the city’s key Jewish heritage institutions: the Holocaust Museum of Porto, the Jewish Museum of Porto, and the Kadoorie Mekor Haim Synagogue, including its Jewish Art Gallery. The venues will be open for visits throughout the day, offering an opportunity to explore Porto’s Jewish history, heritage and contemporary community life.

Alongside the open visits, a varied cultural programme will bring together film, literature, music and historical reflection. The programme includes screenings of The 2,000 Kidnapped Jewish Children, 1506: The Genocide in Lisbon and Sefarad; presentations of the books At the Table in Sepharad by Mónica Pinto and Jewish Lives by Carlos Carvalheira; and a performance by the Mekor Haim Choir at the Kadoorie Mekor Haim Synagogue.

At 15:00, historian César Santos Silva will give the lecture “Education, memory and the future: what Jewish history teaches us about the making of Oporto”, exploring the relationship between Jewish history, memory and the city’s development.

Through this rich programme, the European Days of Jewish Culture in Porto invite audiences to encounter Jewish heritage as a living and multifaceted part of European culture, connecting historical memory with education, creativity and contemporary Jewish life.

Practical information: Activities take place on Sunday, 6 September 2026, from 10:00 to 17:00. Talks will be held in Portuguese. Seating for the 15:00 lecture is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis.
