Salomone Rossi in Venice: Music, Faith and Encounter
In 1622, the Mantuan composer Salomone Rossi (ca. 1570–ca. 1630) arrived in Venice to prepare the publication of Hashirim Asher Li’Shlomo (The Songs of Solomon), the first printed collection of polyphonic music in Hebrew.
In Venice, Rossi entered a vibrant Jewish intellectual world shaped by Rabbi Leone da Modena and poet and intellectual Sarra Copia Sulam. The event explores the encounter between these three remarkable figures and the cultural context that made Rossi’s groundbreaking collection possible, bringing together music, poetry, faith, and intellectual exchange.
The event combines a presentation of the research into this encounter with a screening of Rossi’s Lamnatzéach al-hagitít / Psalm 8 and Hashkivénu / Evening Prayer, performed by Profeti della Quinta in the Spanish Synagogue of the Venetian Ghetto and filmed in December 2021.
